“Doris Buffett, sister of billionaire philanthropist Warren Buffett, has pledged $200,000 to Spectrum Youth and Family Services in Burlington to create a second home for formerly homeless teens and young adults.The pledge comes in the form of a challenge grant through Doris Buffet’s Sunshine Lady Foundation. Spectrum must raise an equal amount as it tries to open an eight-unit “single room occupancy” home.
“We have to raise $200,000 to get the $200,000. She’ll match it dollar for dollar,” Spectrum Director Mark Redmond said.
Spectrum has operated a nine-unit single-room-occupancy home on Maple Street for more than a dozen years. The waiting list for rooms has ranged in recent years from eight to 17 young adults.
“We could have it filled tomorrow,” Redmond said, referring to the new facility.
He said the new home will be located at 177 Pearl St., which is owned by Spectrum. It houses the charity’s development office and its Jump On Board for Success program…”
