PEER SPECIALIST/SERVICE COORDINATOR- Peer Specialists are individuals who have progressed in recovery from substance abuse or mental health issues and are willing to self-identify with clients as a peer. They work to assist other individuals in managing their substance abuse or a mental health issues. The life experience of peer specialists in mental health treatment give them an expertise that professional training cannot replicate. Peer specialists assist their peers in articulating their goals for recovery, learning and practicing new life skills, modeling effective coping techniques and self-help strategies and supporting them in advocating for themselves to obtain effective services.
