Brattleboro Housing Authority to take down Hayes Court and replace with new housing

“WEST BRATTLEBORO — The Brattleboro Housing Authority announced Tuesday afternoon that it will demolish the existing buildings of public housing development Hayes Court to accommodate the construction of an enhanced living facility at the same location. After years of exploring various options for constructing the new facility, the Brattleboro Housing Authority Board of Commissioners voted Monday night to pursue the redevelopment and inform the tenants on Tuesday. About 20 of Hayes Court’s roughly 70 residents gathered in the development’s community meeting room to discuss plans for the future with the housing authority’s executive director, Christine Hart. Those attending the meeting were told that everyone living in Hayes Court will have to find new homes in the months to come, as all nine buildings — 72 units — will be torn down. In its place, the housing authority will build a 36-unit enhanced living facility and, eventually, additional independent living units. Hart detailed the housing authority’s plans to assist in the residents’ relocation, reassuring them that an experienced team has been assembled to help them through the process.
